Well I was going for a darker look, and this was not shot during the day. It was shot at night with an off camera flash. I am very happy with the way that it turned out.
I will move the light farther back next time, and a little higher up, and that will create the shadows. I might try using some reflectors and/or a shoot through umbrella, and shoot it underexposed.
fuck. i just typed this and it disappeared. i'll try it again... what i meant was that if you do it when it's sunnier, or brighter outside (natural or artificial) then you could get all the blind slashes you mentioned in the post, and depending on the angle, you could also get that rad, moody lighting from the original. what a run-on! love you. meg

be it wasn't bright enough outside. angle sometimes messes it up too. try it again on a sunnier day... i've had it work before.
